Coping With Loneliness When You’re Single

It’s no secret that life can get a little lonely when you’re single.       But that doesn’t mean it has to be. There’s a lot you can do to keep yourself active and in good company. There’s also a great deal you can do to be truly happy in your own company.

Love Yourself

You’ve kept yourself in good company all this years, so you can’t be that bad! The most important thing to learn to do in life is to love yourself. Self-care is important. There’s nothing wrong with looking in the mirror regularly, and picking out the odd thing or two that you like about your face and body. You might even find yourself smiling as you realise what you like about the way you look. Yes, it’s great when someone else tells you what they like about the way you look, but nothing compares to recognising it yourself. It’s not just the way you look either, but how you feel. Keep on top of both your physical and mental health, particularly mental health if you are feeling lonely. If you think you might be struggling make an appointment with your doctor, they’re there to listen.

Get Active

Easier said than done, right? There are a few ways to ease yourself into this one. The first is simple, just pop out for a walk. This works regardless of whether you live in a town or in the countryside. Getting out of the house in itself can be really up lifting. If you’ve been feeling a little lonely it can be great to just go out and see people, even if you’re not interacting with them. You could take up a class to gain a new skill or practice a hobby. Something artistic, or perhaps a dance class. A class which involves physical exercise, like dance, can be a great way to lift your mood and help keep on top of your health. You’re also likely to get talking to the other members and the teachers. You never know who you might meet.

Companionship

Companionship comes in all shapes and sizes. Whether it’s chatting to your neighbours, getting to know the local shopkeepers, or our particular favourite – the fluffy variety! If you’re feeling isolated home, why not consider getting a pet? A cat or dog can be great company, and dogs in particular ensure you get out of the house and chatting to other pet owners. Just remember, they are likely to affect your choice of partner, as most people are either cat or dog lovers!

Network

Finally, don’t be afraid to try a dating app. Whether you’re ready to start dating seriously or not, dating apps are a really good way to connect with people. In our experience, we always find dates work best when you choose to do something you wanted to do anyway, like visiting a show or an exhibition. Loneliness happens to all of us at various points in our lives, but there are plenty of ways to manage it. Don’t be a stranger to putting yourself out there and doing something new and exciting, you never know who you might meet!
